Camping on Dartmoor

Trying to find a nice campsite on (or near) Dartmoor for next Summer - any tips? Most of the sites I've seen charge about as much as a cottage! Sounds far too pricey...

Have stayed here many years ago, on the edge of the moor and near Tavistock.

  • Dartmoor is the only national park where you are allowed to camp anywhere so long as you are tidy and considerate etc.

Tourist info places can suggest places and give maps. You can find nice quiet spots that are also close to toilets but you won't get a shower!

Runnage farm....its friendly and welcoming but basic...depends on your style of camping. There's a small stream running through it which kids can play in safely (supervised of course) sheep in the field...yes in the camp field!

Toilets and showers are basic, not the cleanest but if you want back to basics camping its fine.

You can find it on ukcampsite.

Yes, I stayed here last year and, although it rained constantly, the site was very nice. Nothing flash but a river runs through it which was beautiful and there was a phone box (essential as my mob had no reception). Would also recommend the Trout and Tipple pub very nearby - great food, open fire and friendly staff - much needed respite after putting the tent up in the driving rain.... :-)

Harford Bridge Campsite is set within Dartmoor National Park on the banks of the River Tavy. It is the closest campsite to Tavistock, which is a beautiful market town in West Devon. The website link shows the nearby campsites, one of which is recently Caravan and Campsite club site only. The nice thing about Harford Bridge is it is above the Tavistock Sewerage Works, so should be very clean and safe for bathing. There are some nice walks around Peter Tavy, Lydford and Mary Tavy close by.
  • try a website called exclusively dartmoor we went to Bundu camping site not to expensive
