Lots of retailers do this as standard. They are testing your card to make sure its valid. The biggest culprit it Tesco. If you use pay at the pump to get petrol you'll see this happening.
i have had a large problem with this on tesco mobile. i'd moved, and was just entering the last 4 numbers for the card because i'd used it before. didn't work, tried it again, didn't work, went through from the begining didn't work
checked my bank - they'd reserved 3 amounts of £10, what i was trying to top up each time. i was furious since that was all the money i had left.....

Well i have my new debit card now and have used it.
However there is still a £1 difference between my balance and current cleared balance. It's been like that for 14 days now.
How long can it take for a pre authorisation to drop off? i thought it was only ever a week?
