system32 missing

Hi, my OH's computer won't start up and is saying 'Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt' '\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM It says we can attempt to repair using the original setup cd-rom, the only problem is he doesn't have it anymore, is there anything else we can do? It's an XP operating system.

it is possible to do it with a linux boot CD like Ubuntu and then copy the files required from a restore point to replace the following

c:\windows\system32\config\system
c:\windows\system32\config\software
c:\windows\system32\config\sam
c:\windows\system32\config\security
c:\windows\system32\config\default

tried to do a restore but it just shut down before giving choice of restore points

hey, finally got the pc running using the recovery whatsit, it said that some programs may need reinstalling but that all data and documents would be saved but they have all gone and there was some really sentimental pics on there that have vanished, is there anyway of getting them back, i have tried finding a restore point but there are none, any ideas??
