I'd certainly recommend trying to search for local eBay bargains - lots of last minute deals to be had on furniture and electricals, especially local ones (if you can find them) that need to be picked up from the seller, which in your case is ideal because you're looking for bigger electrical things like fridges, and large pieces of furniture, etc.

Try this - http://www.honestjohnny.co.uk/localbargains it's a tool that finds all the bargains on ebay that are local to you (just enter your post code) so you can get them for next to nothing, and pick them up.

Hope that helps! We've moved house lots of times so I know how difficult it can be getting everything together furniture-wise, especially if you're on a tight budget.

The house is totally unfurnished apart from an oven. My dad is donating a brand new bed and mattress :) And my mum will get me a TV. So thats a big help.

I am thinking basic fridge from argos (£189) good price or not?

Washing machine ebay as cant really afford new one at the mo. Or can suggest somewhere else?

Seen some lovely sofas (2 seaters as the room is quite small, but i do get what your saying! I'll just have to snuggle up! ) from DFS (i can hear the gasps!) but they seem a good price to me £289 each and yes it does have interest free credit which does really help at the mo. Is it really a bad thing to take advantage of this or am i still being naive? I think £289 isn't a bad price, from what i can see?

Erm and then little bits and pieces, kettle, toaster, curtains, iron, ironning board, desk from argos, as i like their stuff, it is a name i trust and they are fairly priced i think. Also as above i would buy stuff from there anyway so why not take advantage of the extra leeway and spread it out a little.

If it was you what items would you splurge on and what would save on?

    katie,

try harveys, i got a 3 seater and 2 seater brown leather turin sofa and it was £398 for the pair, think the offer is still on, and its guranteed xmas delivery.

I am thinking of making the move in the next month or so. What do I do first and how?? Utilities? TV licence? Counicl Tax?

There are likely to be utilities already running in the house, so just make a note of the meter readings when you move in. Tv licence and council tax quite easy to do once your in. I wouldn't worry about any of that until your moved in.

The main thing depending on your provider is you would want to setup the internet pretty quickly. So if its not installed you want this as soon as. As this will be your lifeline to bargains and information. Check if its at site and book it for day or day after you move in.

freecycle is good, but again the fact your in a different area, no point now but once you have moved in as it will be closer and can come straight back to your property where you need it.

My first suite was a cottage style type and my sisters was a conservatory cane type, both very cheap second hand to get you up and running.

Microwave, as will do most things and some have grills and hot plates too.

Would definitely advise not to go for any interest free credit. Just get what you can afford. By the time you have saved the money, you will have researched the best prices and be pretty sure you want it.

Get yourself a little toolkit, it will always come in handy. Screwdrivers, pliers, hammer (use wisely).

Most important, enjoy your own space. Don't worry about what other people have.

Yes they are still at that price. They look really nice, now I can't really see in the picture, are they a big sofa or smallish, as they are to go in a small room so don't want to overcrowd it? Its so difficult to judge on the pics and in the showroom! Of course it looks perfectly proportioned in the vast showroom but put it it the lounge and you can't move for sofas! (gosh im starting to sound like my mother!!!)
  • they are not huge sofas, i dont have a massive room, more sort of cosy if you know what i mean and i have them in an l shape position and i still have plenty of room,
there should be some dimensions on the webpage on harveys if that helps at all to roughly measure it out.

try gumtree aswell. They have a freebie section but you can usually find some good deals in all the other 'for sale' sections.

Also. Just have a really god think about the basics that you will require to live from day to day. Then as the days, weeks and months go by, you will have a better idea as to what you need for the property. Lots of shops have sales on now but remember the january sales aswell.....not long to go if you can hold out for a few more weekes before getting some of the items you may require.

Obviously your going to need a few essentials and you've had some good advice from here. Most electrical companies have a 'reconditioned' section so its a good idea to try there. And if you love shopping, go on some major bargain hunting around your local town or the next big city. am sure you'll have a bit of fun doing some detective work.

    Happy hunting
