Cat and Fireworks

Any suggestions on how to calm down a stressed cat?
The fireworks have only just started and he cowered on the lounge floor and then went and hid behind the back of the sofa. Generally he hates loud noise anyway.
Do I coax him out or just leave him there?

It's Lily's first experience with fireworks, and so far she's been pretty good. Although she's asleep at the minute so can't hear them anyway.
I would just leave him be until he decides its safe enough to come out, trying to remove him from his safe place will stress him out even more. Just make sure he knows you're still there for him by talking to him for a bit.trying to become a moneysaving student0 -
We had a bit of thunder the other morning and he got so stressed that he was sick.
I've put a bit of music on to try and drown out the sounds of the fireworks and I've put a blanket down in the spot he is hiding so he can snuggle up to it.0 -
Have you got the radio on? RThey've just started here and I've put the tv on, for both dogs and cats, my cts actually like fireworks, and love to watch them, and they don't seem to bother the dogs but I prefer to keep the ''bang impact'' down by having other more even noise going.0

One of my dogs in on valerian tabs to calm him down, but the other isn't bothered by the fireworks at all:rolleyes:It's a shame for the pets that are scared though, cos there's no let up for weeks around here:mad::mad:"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"

In all fairness it's not been too bad here, it's only tonight that they have really started. Music is on (cat is currently enjoying Metallica) and he's still behind the sofa but I'm constantly stroking him, although my arm is starting to ache.0

Like others have said, try putting the TV or radio on as a distraction or get one of his favorite toys and see if that helps, otherwise I would just leave him and let him know you're close by.
My cat is loving watching the fireworks but he's deaf so the bangs don't affect him. I feel sorry for the other poor animals who are scared.0 -

My (rescue) cat is just the same with fireworks. She creeps off behind the sofa and comes out when the noise has stopped. I just leave her as she evidently feels safer there.0 -
Poor kitty, id leave him where he is.
Our cat is currently sitting on the windowsill in our bedroom watching the fireworks display in the park over the road and ooohing and ahhhing along with us! hahaWhat matters most is how well you walk through the fire0 -
None of our animals have ever bothered about fireworks however I have jumped numerous times tonight!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0
