Just moved home, there is a line - don't know the number!

Hi folks

I've recently moved home and there is a phoneline, but the land lord doesn't know the number! The previous tennant didn't open a landline account so I'm stuck! I've just phoned BT but they won't tell me the number unless I open an account, which i don't really want to do!

I was going to open a talktalk account but I can't without a phone number...

any advice?

Is there a dial tone? If so, dial 17070 and listen for the, "This circuit is identified as ....." announcement.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    thanks, I'll try this!
  • I'm in a similar situation. I can get a line 'reconnected' without paying the £120 fee if take up line rental with BT (for 12 months) but would need a new line installed if I went with anyone else as I dont have the phone number (ie. Post Office - no contract, cheaper, better calls package). Seems like BT still have a lot of power over the phone lines.

All I want is a phone line so I can get good reliable internet connection and 3 weeks in its still not happened as I dont have a phone number, and I dont want to pay £120 for a property I might only live at for 6 months !

On the plus side, next door has not protected their router very well and being an IT geek I'm using that to my advantage!

Any service provider can arrange installation if they want to , but not all of them want to,
If BT Retail are happy to not charge an install fee in return for a minimum term calls contract then how is that 'power' over the lines ??, Openreach charge the service provider BT Retail, BTR absorb the charge to get the customer (BTR still pay OR)
Dont like BTR's deal, then use another SP, if you want to be a Post Office customer get them to provide the line, simple

PlusNet have offered me the same free reconnection as BT, but only a rolling monthly contract and no mention of needing to make a set number of calls.

Right, I know my number but I'm stuck again!!

I tried to get a talktalk account but they say that I would need a new line as there's something on the one that's there, isdn or homehighway, it doesn't know just offered these as possiblities..

So, is my only option to get phone and broadband with BT, unless I pay another service provider for a new line? talktalk can do a new line for £60ish pounds, which is too much to spend in one go at the moment as the cost of moving house as wiped me out :o

if there's any other options that you might know of, I'd love to hear!!

    thanks!!

I'm going to have a look at this company now, I'm always dubious of signing up to a company I haven't heard of!

Having a line from BT does not tie you to BT for broadband, for exmple you can BT line rental and get O2 broadband, Sky broadband plus many others. In fact you will find it much easier to change broadband supplier if you have a BT line. BT do a free installation offer if you agree to an 18 month contract, search on here there is more information about it.

Plusnet are a well established ISP who were purchased by BT since the end of 2006.

I think it may be run as a separate business though.
