Move from BT?

I'm on the basic BT package at the moment and wonder if it is worth moving to a different provider. Are there any cheaper deals out there? I think that line-rental is £11 a month on my package. I'm nervous about moving from BT as I like the telephone number that I have.

Don't be nervous, you keep your phone number when you move from BT to another provider. There are cheaper deals and the best one will depend on your usage etc. Check out.....

Consider all aspects of other providers' offers VERY CAREFULLY before changing.

BT are now required to allow other providers to re-sell their line rental (it's known as WLR) and then most of those other providers merely cut the headline rental rate by 50p or so per month to make their offering appear worthwhile.

However, you may find that they then impose charges for additional services (e.g. Caller Display, basic 1571, Premium Rate call barring etc.) which BT provide at no charge and/or that they have carefully written their T&Cs so that they can bar your use of prefix providers (1899, 18185 etc.) if they want to. Additionally, some charge 'premiums' for calling NGNs too so, because, unlike with a CPS provider, you'll have lost the ability to use the 1280 prefix to 'hop back onto' BT for specific calls, you'll be lumbered with their higher prices.

Be particularly wary of Utility Warehouse (for whom Mike by the Sea kindly tells us he is a distributor). They charge a monthly 'membership fee' which , effectively, increases what they charge for landline rental to more than what BT charges.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
