Hi guys
I have a packard bell Easy note R4 series laptop 9 months old.
recently it has started crashing, when i mean crashing it just powers off,
it doesn't close down it just powers off as though the mains has been switched off and there was no battery fitted,
it happens on both mains and battery power.
i could be doing anything at the time so i cant even say it happens on a specific application, the only upgrade has been memory but this has happened before the upgrade as well,
No virus's or spyware is on the machine as i have just completed a fresh install as the propblem was happening before and is still happening,
I hope i have made myself clear
whilst trying to edit this thread it just crashed again
anyway running XP home SP2 all upto date
any ideas
Lee

Hi Lee, Does it turn off after a long time of use and does the bottom feel red hot when it shuts down? I am just wondering because it maybe a heat issue you have here.
Also have you altered any settings in the bios which could lead to it shutting down after x amount of time?
Another thing is, did you notice this happening after installing new software?0 -
i Have around the same problem but mine is a L4 the screen just switches off or turns a random colour like purple or green. It's really strange i just take battery out and mains off, then put it back in and boot up the laptop again and its fine. I did read in a magazine that some of the batterys around that time over heat and you need to ask for a replacement. Also thinking about it my laptop did do what you decribe of like just cuting off totaly yesturday when i was on turbo lister.Cashback sites are worth it:
GP Cashback- £50 (£35 paid)
PigsBack- £5.00 (£30 paid)
Topcashback- £40 (£40 paid)
Quidco- £50 (£43 paid)
Ipoints- 500 + 2 CDs claimed0 -

its switches off ramdomly it may have just been switch on sometimes only after 5 mins was think about heat issue but dont think its that on everst sensor says 40 deg c 104F
there is no bios setting like that
in relation to new software at on point all i had on was XP and it was still happening ,
Piers
this happens with both the battery in and out
I'm really stuck for ideas I might be taking it back to PC world to have a look at0 -
Its a heat problem, the laptop id getting warm then shutting down to save itself.
A few things to try, dont use it on your lap
use it on a hard surface
check the fan vent usually near the back/corner check they arnt blocked if they are try and clear the dust and crap. compresed air/or use your mouth.
try to keep the environment cool, dont use it on a dest with a heater or radiator under it.
some laptops have a panel that allows access to the underside, a 9 month old laptop isstill under warrenty but if it isnt then remove the panel and see if it makes a difference it does the same as removing the case from a pc keeping it cool.
if the above works then it proves its a heat problem get yourself a cooling pad to sit your laptop on, they have fans built in them that cools the bottom of the laptop.0 -

really dont understand how this can be a heat issue i understand what you are saying but its used on a desk in my office no heat in hear, also have already checked the heat outlet and not blocked
have just removed the panel and its only dropped 1degree will leave like this for the time being and see what happens0 -
Do you have another battery and mains adaptor you could try?0
-
replacing the battery and see if that makes any difference0
-
He already said it does it without a battery so can't see how that would help.
Does the laptop auto-restart itself with this problem or does it just switch off completely?0 -
sorry for not replying sooner kept on crashing so went and cut the grass
anyway no it doesn't restart itself just goes off0
