No frost here in north London yet, thank goodness! Still, I saw on the weather forecast recently that they mentioned at this time last year some regions had snow0

I had an ice warning in the car yesterday and the temp didnt get over 2 degrees all the way to work! It was very wintery - we are in the North. You can stand there and agonize........

If you have the ability to use a programmable thermostat, it can make a huge difference.
In my first house, the only controller was a battery controlled thermostat. You simply set the temperature & it'd turn the heating on if it was too cold.
As there was no power feed (before the days of wireless), I switched to a battery controlled timer/thermostat. Means I can set different temperatures for different times of day. Means I could set it to say 12 degrees overnight, then come on in the morning to take the chill off - up to say 16c, before dropping back down an hour later to 12c whilst everyone is at work. Weekends are the best as I can take the chill off the house in the morning for an hour, before going up a few degrees for the rest of the day, meaning if you want a lie in you won't get too hot for at least an hour or two.0 -
Previous winters I have run up huge bills leaving the gas central heating on all the time, this year I have installed a dual fuel burner and have been lighting it in the eves, gas heating goes on for 1-2 hrs before my eve shower. Stays off during w/ends - my plan is to not let the gas companys exploit me anymore.0

Suppose it depends how big the house is and how many rooms you are heating. I live in a 2 bedroom flat with my kitchen being part of my front room so my flat heats quite quickly. I only have my heating on when I really need it to go on, at the moment I have only had to put it on for an hour to an hour and a half at the most in the evening and it stays nice and warm after that for a while0
