Opinions Please... Picture Rail

Hello :)

We are currently thinking about how to decorate the master bedroom and would quite like a feature wall however we have a picture rail so not sure whether this would work?

What are the general opinions on picture rails, are they dated now?

Any opinions would be welcomed :)

I don't think its a matter of them being dated, it depends on what sort of house they are in and if they suit the feel of the room.

A picture rail with a lighter colour at the top can make a room seem much larger, but I see your point with trying to make a feature wall.
I would have the other three walls a neuteral colour and the feature wall up to the picture rail in a paper or colour you want and have the top all the same to pull it all together.

Perhaps you can use the picture rail for its intended purpose and hang a fabulous picture on your feature wall from the rail.

Personally I love picture rails but I love older houses in general.

I'd say you can still have a feature wall with a picture rail in place - exactly as the above post we have three neutral walls in our lounge and the end wall covered in mad crazy 'feature' wallpaper. The picture rail is painted neat white and running around the entire room does help bring it all together quite nicely. Abvoe the picture rail is just white so its doesn't stand out or anything.

I think they add a little bit of interest to a wall personally. Plus, you can hang your wet washing off them on coat hangers! Top tip ;)
  • Hello Kandipandi, thanks for your reply!

The house is 1926.. I don't think I've got a natural eye for decorating so I've found rennovating and picking colour schemes quite difficult while we've been doing up our house.

Love the idea of putting a picture on it!!

Feature wall would be behing our bed. The door to the bedroom is also on the same wall (to the right of the bed). would that look ok do you think?
  • Hello bosseyed!

I think that the property make-over programs would call a picture rail a "period feature". If you like it then keep it. If you don't then remove it. It could be very easily reinstated at a later date.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

I think that will be fine. Your feature wall is the same as mine in my bedroom, the door is on my wall and the wall behind my bed is a very nice antique pink and silverish paper (rather expensive but I only used 2 rolls) and the other three walls are white, all my accessories bed linen and pictures match the wall and if I get sick of pink I just have to change one wall and my accessories.

Get some picture hooks and some wire and make a feature of that rail instead of being ashamed of it :)

  • Hehe thank you!

Also love the sound of your wallpaper! Where is it from?

I quite like some plain silvery wallpaper I've seen in Laura Ashley, it's almost pearlescent (sp?) but OH doesn't seem to like it :(

As mentioned, it's what YOU like!!

But I just did a Google images search for 'rooms with picture rails', not many, but if you clik through & be a bit selective, you might find something like yours.

But as it's an old house, it may well be the 'period feature' that SHOULD be there!!
