I have been using an average of 11 units a day since the 989 jump which equates to about 4000 units per year. My previous three years before the current one have averaged out at about 4000 too. The current year has now jumped 10,000 units so I believe my meter very rarely is jumping a great deal of units.

I would guess that 11 KHW's sounds about right. We use under 15 KHW's per day and that's for a family of four with gas c/h and hob.

The earlier suggestion about turning off your electric at the consumer unit was sound. You never know, you could have a faulty appliance or some faulty wiring which is consuming alot of electricity.

Does your meter have a visible wheel rotating under the dials. Is this wheel spinning very fast?

There are other appliances which use large amounts of electricity but are not associated with heating!. 300 / 500W Halogen floor uplighters are the latest modern lighting trend in many houses, and eat upto 1/2kw of electricity every hour for each lamp!. A friend has two of these in his front room, then wonders why his electricity bill is so high!.

Others are halogen floodlights which many of us have fitted to our back gardens and pathways. If your neighbour has suddenly got a cat, this could be falsely triggering your floodlight whilst you sleep and slowly running up your bills.

Dishwashers, Power Washers, and even some 1500W - 2000W driven vacuum cleaners are all culprits too.

If you get high bills suddenly, any or all of these may be the culprits, don't just assume that its to do with heating or cooking!.

But take an average household and consider a few 100W bulbs burning, the Washer, Iron, PC and TV all Running can often run into 1000's of watts when combined, which equal many KWH's burned every evening

I've had a further thought. 1000-11= 989. From my early banking days differences divisible by 9 were suspect because they pointed to the posibilty of misplaced figures, as 1 for10 and 10 for 1000. A difference of 989 nealy fills the criterion being one off from 990.As said above 11 per day seems reasonable, If the readings of 26 and 27 May had been misread by 1000 approx- i.e. should have started with 53xxx then the last reading given would be quite reasonable. That is why I asked what subsequent readings were in my last post.

IMO and without any relection on csiman, readings should always be chaecked carefully especially if the light is bad as ina garage or the meter placed awkwardly. I always use a good torch, being nearly 70.
