after seeing on this site that First Direct were offering 3% for a year on ISAs I applied for one in order to transfer an existing one in from Alliance and Leicester (who are now paying 0.10%) and also to pay in the full amount for this year.
On their application form they asked for my current salary which I declined to give them as it has no bearing on opening an ISA. They called me last night to ask "some security questions" about my application one of which was to find out how much I earn. I pointed out that this was not necessary to invest in an ISA and I had no intention of telling them, to which they said that they could not accept my application. Fine, I will place my money elsewhere and so will my wife who was also going to invest with them. Their loss!

An odd line from FD. They probably wanted to know it so they could try and punt you other services....but like you, I can't see the relevence when opening an ISA.
It's just a shame their processes don't make allowances for a refusal to answer this question?!0

Coming from a slightly different angle - anyone got any experience of how long FD take to respond to transfers out?
Have all my ISA money with them at the moment, but seeing previous post can get a better rate elsewhere.
For ease of management would like to keep all my ISA money in one place - but my experience with other providers (shAbbey etc....!!) is that they can take the full month to do the transfer out.
Although I guess the only actual 'loss' of interest would be while the cheque was in the post ......is it worth it for only 0.0015% gain !!!!
(I got the FD ISA fixed at 3.1%)0

I think that's 0.15%, not 0.0015%. But it's still debatable whether it's worth switching for a small differential.
Are there no penalties on the FD fixed?0
