Mineral make-up skin prep

I've noticed that some mineral make-up companies sell a skin prep which you are supposed to apply before their make-up to help it stay on.
Having had a look on the Lily Lolo and Elemental Beauty websites I can't see that they sell anything like this, where as Bare Minerals do. Is a prep really necessary or will these products stay on without them? I'm reluctant to spend money on a prep lotion if it's not really needed.
I've not yet bought any mineral make-up but am keen to try so any advice would be appreciated.

I have used Bare Escentuals mineral makeup on and off for some years now and I have never used a prep, just my normal moisturiser and the makeup has always looked good and stays on all day.

I suspect it is just a ploy to get you to spend more money and buy unnecessary products.
  • The reason i use a primer with my mineral make up is that it was part of the starter pack. I think that what it does is mop up some of the excess moisturiser if I haven't waited long enough for it to sink in properly so when I swirl on the mineral makeup it dusts evenly and lightly onto 'dry' skin.
(My primer is a mineral powder rather than another cream)
I use it on my whole face including eyes which are quite heavy lidded and I am finding that the eyeshadow is staying better so I probably will use again.

I have just order 3 samples from Elemental Beauty for the foundations as I haven't tried this before and she gets really good reviews if you do google searches. If I like it I will get the eyeshaddows as they looked good (again from a reviewer).

    Cheers

    Erm..........

My prep is usually soap and water, followed by Liz Earle light moisturiser. I then go off and do bits and bobs, have breakfast and then apply mineral make up. Not heard of this 'prep' before. Is it really necessary?? Or just another way of getting you to spend more?

Ive tried all different primers over the years and tbh the best finish I get is on well moisturised skin that is smooth. So ex-foliating a couple of times a week is more use to me then a primer

I have the BE primer/moisturiser or whatever it is and its nothing magical - I very rarely use it. I think it has something in it to try and brighten skin but you dont really need it.

    Hi everyone

My samples from Elemental Beauty have just arrived and this is the first time I will have used mineral makeup, so any tips to get me started. I guess I will have to put the colour into a plastic container and dip brush in and then shake off the excess. i have a spot on my face as well so should I cover that up first with a bit of noral concealer not mineral.

    cheers

  • You don't have to use a primer specifically for Mineral make up, any primer will work. Really it depends on what sort of skin you have and how much make up you use. If your skin is oily or you find by the end of the day your make up isn't looking so fresh, a primer will help it keep put. If you have small lines/wrinkles/large pores, a silicon based primer will help plump them out so when the make up is applied they won't be as noticiable. If you are getting photos taken or are going to be under light a primer will keep the make up fixed better bt if it is down to budget, you can live without it. I use estee lauder top secrets under my mineral make up. its not specifically a primer but it works for me. I have used smashbox silicon primer before too which lasted ages.

    Hope this helps
