I just phoned vaillant their charges are £250 one off fix and repair including all parts and labour.

Vaillants service warranty cover is in 3 levels with warmsure

level 1 - Boiler and controls only, unlimited call outs parts and labour £107.88 a year

level 2 - boiler, controls, annual service, unlimited call outs parts and labour £179.88 a year

level 3 - boiler, controls and whole system inc pipes, rads and annual sevice, parts and labour £197.88 a year

I phoned British gas too and they were £192.00 one off fix and repair all parts included but thier service warranty is higher than vaillant/warmsures by a lot

I think on both vaillant and british gas with the one off fix and repair if they have to go back a second time to finish off the job they add charges for that too

I feel with these prices and the job supposedly being a fairly easy diy one I still want to try and do it myself somehow, its just a matter of getting to know how to isolate valves etc and empty the system on the boiler properly before its repressurised again as that bit was missed out.

I see a gold small thing under the boiler with a thread around it and that seems a bit like a tap but cant see how to get it to empty, there are 2 of them one close to each of the taps I need to turn when filling it up would it be one of those and if so how do I get it to empty?
    Thanx

Just wanted to come back and tell everyone that I did get the boiler sorted. A friend of a friend came to look at and I didnt need any parts at all he just re pressurised the vessel and said just see how it goes in case there mightr be a tiny hole in the valve but it hasnt had to be topped up since. He only wanted to charge me £10 but I gave him £20.

We arranged for him to come baxk and fit me a new radiator thermostat and the silver joint thing that its attached to as the pin had broken in the thermostat, plus he put a new washer in the kitchen tap. He charged me £55 for those 2 things and the heatings been fine.

Only thing is, since it was done I have screaming from the taps when they are run and the shower which is a myra gas shower, it shakes the floor sometimes and judders but the noise is really high pitched and deafening, it actually seems to be getting louder as time goes on. Is there any easy fix for this?
    Thanx

  • Hi

Loose jumper or washer in the mains stopcock. Strip it down and /or renew.

I have noticed it doesnt make the noise if its the cold tap, just the hot taps and gas shower and if 2 hot taps are on at the same time say the sink downstairs and someone is using bath shower or sink upstairs its even worse.

Would having the boiler repressurised and the new thermostat and joint on the radiator have had any affect on this happening? The system wasnt drained down just emptied enough to change the thermostat but it started after they were done
    Thanx

Check that that the main stopcock is completely open.

By main stopcock do you mean the tap under the sink that turns off the entire house supply?

There are 2 stoptaps under there doing the same job. This happened when I had the boiler put in 3 years ago. I don't know how he did it but when the plumbers had gone I found that I couldnt turn the outside tap off from its stoptap under the sink and that both the main stoptap and outside stoptap then both turned the mains on and off instead. He came back but instead of fixing the stoptap that used to be for the outside one he cut into the pipe under a shelf in another cupboard further along to make a new outside stoptap so this still leaves 2 main stoptaps and a new outside tap, hope that wont affect this.

I will ask daughter to check them for me tomorrow as I can't get to them myself, I don't really want to get a plumber out again unless its really necessary
    Thanx
