Just had a phone call, not had any experience of this myself so maybe someone can shed some light.

XP home - got a virus, reformat, install XP from scratch. No problems during install, all goes to plan stan.

1st thing after install finished is to put SP on. Goto windiz update and it wants to put 44 critical updates on before showing SP2. Critical updates installs ok, needs reboot, but now wont reboot fully. Gets as far as loading drivers in SOS mode and reboots itself like theres a conflict.

Boots fine into safe mode.

I've never seen this before and its the second time he's tried formatting from scratch with exactly the same results so I doubt its a coincidence.

Does anyone know what the critical updates are before SP's can be installed?

Anyone?

I would say motherboard and/or I/O drivers. So get the latest not-from-MS drivers for chipset and IDE/Sata controller and install in safe mode?
In the United Kingdom 200,000 people are bitten by dogs every year and some people will die as a result. Of those bitten, 70% are children... So the question has to be asked....... Has the time come to ban children?

Couldn't you try it from an SP2 CD? Is he doing this behind a firewall, i.e. not picking up an infection (sasser) while he is trying to patch?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

    Okay try the following:
    • Reinstall Windows XP, Then the updates, Then download and install all the lastest drivers from the manfacture website, Make sure you reboot after every driver and applcation is installed, ive seen this problem before and its normally beucause outdated drivers, or drivers being installed the same times as updates without rebooting causing conflicts!

    Thanks Tom :-)

Id go with this get SP2 on CD from any good PC store or PC World :D and install XP then the SP2 disk as it has all the SP1 updates inclusive.

Or use Nlite to intergrate SP2 in to xp install, this has allways worked for me without any problems :-)

    Thanks Tom :-)

    Cheers people,

I'm going over 2mrw night to look so will report back the solution/problem.

I've got SP2 saved to disc now and I've got the Nforce3 chipset drivers.
