Another method of payment is a CHAPS payment. It's an instant transfer which has undergone strict checks to make sure that funds are available, transactions are legal and account details and identification is correct.

These payments can cost around £30 but for a very large amount of money or where money is needed immediately, they are a good method of payment.

Either you aren't telling us the full story, or you are letting the bank fob you off to a ridiculous extent.

The money cannot be "sitting waiting for Barclays to clear it". As the last few posts have said, if the money's been paid in (directly by the employer, by BACS) the funds arrive ready-cleared in either your Barclays account or Barclays' suspense account. If you have paid in cheques, they will have been cleared and the money credited to either your Barclays account or Barclays' suspense account.

In either case, the money will either be in your account - in which case Barclays have got no reason to deny your access to it, whatever systems problems they claim to have - or in their suspense account - in which case, all you have to do is provide evidence of the deposits, and they'll match them up with the proper account.

You can't just let it go on for apparently ages with them saying "we have a systems problem and can't let you have your money". That's ridiculous!

If I couldn't access £1 of my money for 1 day because my bank had lost it, or their systems wouldn't let them give it to me, I'd have ranted from here to the Chief Executive's office until I actually got the money.

So I'd suggest you do the same. Or reveal the missing part of your story which ACTUALLY explains what is holding things up.
