Preparation & Options for C/H installer visit / quote

Hi everyone,

I hope this is sufficiently different to warrant a separate discussion. Feel free to comment if it is not.

I need to replace/move my CH boiler, in so doing I will switch to a combi. I'm aware of the different quality brands, I don't feel its worth covering that here.

My questions are about :-
a) is it worth considering changing my electric shower to a thermostatic one at the same time ?
b) is this something within the scope of a heating engineer?
c) should I be considering the introduction of TRVs, by the engineer at the same time ? (the house is 9 rads, detached, and we plan to extend the kitchen 15x12 feet)
d) given the extension plan should I look for decent capacity in the boiler ?
e) are any other 'changes' worth additional spend, such as zonal heating

I want to try and maximise the opportunity to get it right.

As a guide, I was hoping to spend 2K+(ish) for the boiler replacement, but I could go to 3K mark + if the additional benefits prove worthwhile.

Apologies for the length of this posting, maybe individual bits will prove of interest to others?

    Good evening:
    a) Yes..take advantage of the superior flow rate and cheaper energy costs

    b) It depends...not all RGIs are plumbers or choose to do bathrooms.

    c) TRVs are advisable as is a progammable room stat

    d) A combi boiler would be sized on DHW output as most combis would have sufficient heating output for most properties. Try the boiler sizing wizard here.
If you plan to, or have more than one bathroom a combi could prove to be a disappointment...you need to ascertain your mains supply pressure and flow rates as well a simultaneous drawoff points for DHW.

    e) Lots of bells and whistles available including weather compensation, zonal heating, unvented cylinders etc. Excellent source of info here and here

The cost will be dependent on your location in the UK, site requirements and the standard of the specification...you would be looking at in excess of £3k in the south for an install which follows 'Best Practice'.

Try the CIPHE for a plumber/RGI near you. Always check gas qualifications on GSR.

Let us know how you get on.

    Thanks for both replies :)

I have an installer visiting today who cover Viessman products. I'm open to ideas, but the weather compensator option sounds interesting after a bit of reading.

    Hi guys,
    I promised an update.

I've had a few quotes, and I think I'm in a position to choose.

    I've been offered :-
    a) Viessman 100 , which sounds quality -- dont know how much extra premium there will be on this yet
    b) Worcester Bosch, 30Kw unit (forget the model num)
    c) Simes Modelle ?

This last one is a bit of a curved ball.

    I've never heard of it.

The engineer said he could offer the Simes with 5 year warranty, or the WB with 2 years.

My gut feel says the WB but I'd appreciate any seasoned views?

    Many Thanks :)

Good afternoon: if your RGI is Viessmann trained, he should be able to offer a manufacturer's 5 year parts and labour warranty on the 100. Avoid the Sime. If you get a WB, make sure it is from the CDi range. The OH fits Viessmann, Remeha (also with a 5 year P+L warranty) and Vaillant (all have stainless steel heat exchangers while WBs have aluminium)...professional preference/prerogative.;)

    Thanks Canuck

I looked at the quote , it didnt say which boiler....I shall check if its the CDI model.

The engineer who quoted the Viessman is from their website, so he can offer the 5 years warranty.

Once I get the 3rd quote back, I shall make my choice.

The only downside on the Viessman, I had talked myself into the Weather compensator addition, but he seemed to think it was a waste of time. It's hard to know what's what sometimes.

Good evening: perhaps the RGI doesn't understand how WC works or maybe WC isn't the best option for your property. The OH has yet to install a Viessmann with WC..some folks can't get their heads round the science, don't want to pay the extra or the property isn't suited to it eg. poorly insulated) He usually fits a Honeywell CM 927 wireless programmable roomstat instead. I take it you've read Viessmann's brochure? Weather compensation is also an option on Remehas.
