Hey everyone,
sorry if i've posted this to the wrong place... i'm a newbie to this
I've recently retuned to the uk having lived in oz for almost 10yrs and i just cant seem to get any credit!!.. i never had any probs in oz getting credit and never had any credit in the uk before i left for oz!!
My friend has the same prob when she came bk from the states a yr ago.. she advised me to apply for a few catalogues, make small purchases and pay off the balance straight away as this would help boost my credit rating!!.. i applied online and was accepted straight away and given an instand credit limit.. I logged on the following day to find my credit limit had been reduced to zero!!... I called the catalogue company and the woman told me that after further credit checks they had decided not to off me the credit!!... she would'nt give any further explanation and she told me that they were entitled to do this!!... I have been told that once the credit agreement has been signed (online tick the box) then they cant cancel the agreement unless i have defaulted on payments etc.. I am just at a lose at why this is happening!!
If you can shed any light on this it would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks very much
Shelley

Unless you have it in writing that they were offering you credit, there is little you can do. I would guess that in the terms you were ticking it said something like 'we offer this subject to subsequent credit checks'.
If they don't want to offer you credit, there is nothing that you can do.
The market for credit is very different to even a year ago - so you can't really compare your friend's situation to yours. In the short term, live on your income and work on building a good credit rating.
Remember - as you've been in Oz for 10years you are effectively asking people/banks to lend to someone with no history. Would you give a stranger in the street £100 if they said they would pay you back?0 -
hi there
i had a problem with no credit either not through defaults or anything i just never wanted a credit card or catauloge before
i started with the ones who literaly throw themselfs at you with high interest rates and just used them for things i was going to buy with cash and paid them straight off (credit cards)
i started with catauloge 3 yrs ago
ace
http://www.24ace.co.uk/ss/index.jsp?source=CK84&cm_mmc=GL%20PPC%20GGL%20Ace-_-Ace%20Brand-_-24Ace-_-ace24
capital one credit card
i now have
ace
oli
littlewoods direct
additions direct
next
capital one
barclays credit card
but with next i was declined on the online application and i sent them an email to ask as to why i was refused they replied with a referance number and asked me to phone and when i did they said that they only did a quick credit check on the online application and if i wanted they could do a credit check whils i was on the phone i sais yes as i knew i had no bad history defaults or missed payments, she came back and offered me an account with them, i have only ordered £26 worth of goods off them and i had a statement through today and they have put my limit to £900 i have only been with them 2 months
i was also advised to open a bank account and have direct debits set up from them as this apparently helps with your credit history
the only other thing i can think of is do you get credit history in oz and could you obtain a copy of yours and prehaps forward this onto the companys you are applying to to proove you had previous good history
hope this helps0 -
you'll need to build it up. remember that you have no history in this country and so even things like bank accounts and where you live/tracebility won't be there - even 18 yr olds would have that to an extent. for all they know, you're here temporarily and then going back abroad leaving a lot of debt.
good way would be to get mobile phone contract (if you want one that is) and go for the easier to get higher interest credit cards, use them but pay whatever you spend off straight away so you don't get stung by them. try barclaycard too.
but... I'm not sure how it works if you constantly pay ur credit off in full all the time... a friend once bought a car on credit and paid it off in full a while later...he then got turned down for credit for something else he applied for and he rang the credit check people to ask why as his credit is good (own house, reasonable income, pays on time, not too much out on his name etc) said that he was told by the credit check people that credit co's don't like you paying things off too quickly as you're not profitable for them!!! not sure how true that is?!?! could be a load of rubbish, I don't know.0 -
Why did you come back from Oz??? I know many people who have moved out there and will never come back!!
Have you checked your credit file to see what it says? Just to check that in the 10 years, someone hasn't tried taking out a loan in your name and defaulting...Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Are you on the electoral roll? If not this can hamper your chances of getting credit:j30/7/10:j
