So narked with OH's work!!!!

Hi all.....I know I should be grateful he is employed but I am sooooooo disappionted!

This year he had factory shut down in August for 2 weeks which we thought was just a one off. Tonight he text to say they are doing it again next year.

We went to France for 16 days and hoped to go away next June for 3 weeks (some of you may remember the monumental row we had night before our hols).I will have finished Uni in June so thought I would have a holiuday before starting a new job (hopefully).

We went in our camper van and everywhere was so expensive as high season, it was stressful finding camp sites that had space as we like the freedom of being able to move about as we don't have children.

Thank you for allowing me to have rant. Had a pants week with friend in hospital so am tired and emotional!!!

Again I know I should be grateful we are able to afford a holiday but this has brought back the memories of stressful times last year! Also how carp would it look to say to a new employer...'oh i've just started but I want 3 weeks off next month'.......I just couldn't do it.

He is unhappy at work and now I hate them too. He has been looking for new jobs so hopefully this will be the final catalyst!!!!!!!!

    Sorry, what's the problem?
  • well...that we have to go away in August when it is expensive, crowded....if we can get away at all that is due to my hopefully having a new job.

As I said i should be grateful OH has work and we can afford a holiday but to be honest I hate going away in school holidays as we don't have children.

I will probably be slated for being an ungrateful so and so but I take full ownership oh how I feel!!!!!!
  • no advice but I'd be hacked off as well

Be happy you don't live in most other european countries :) They have these across the country - forget school holidays - try getting an affordable holiday when it's "factory" closure time...

If it's that much of a problem then at least you both have till next year to job hunt for him :)

I can see why your miffed, I would be as well. Does he have to take the the shut down as annual holiday? Does he get paid holidays? Does he have enough holiday due to take a short break in June, not the same but a good long weekend away might be ok.
I understand where you're coming from re. taking holidays when all the kids are off. I hate the rip off prices and crowds of screaming kids but as I have them myself (not usually screaming) I'll have to put up with school holiday holidays for now :o
  • Hi Jillymit.....well..firstly they have to save enough annual leave to cover the shut down.

Currently he has 5 days to take over to next years annual leave entitelemnt ( it runs with calendar year), however......he has a house he rents out and the tenants are leaving later this month so was going to use a few days a/l to do some decorating!!!
We could still go in June I suppose if he has enough time but he would need an extra week if we did go for 3 weeks in August so if he uses up extra this month it doesn't leave much 'spare' fopr rest of year.

Should be grateful you can take 3 weeks at his job.....oh carp...forgot it is highly unlikely i can get 3 weeks off from a new job as likely to be for council!!!!!!

Shutdowns are quite common in some industries, unusual to get 10mths notice.

10mths to organise a decent holiday
  • I know lakeuk.....it is just we thought it was going to be a one off. They did it this year as part of a cost cutting exercise but it didn't really save them much money!!!!

A new employer will usually honour pre-booked holidays, but you may have to take most of it as unpaid leave as you are unlikely to have accrued enough holiday.
