Blackout linings

Options
I've recently hung some new bedroom curtains, 66" wide x 90" drop, and now I'm waking up at 5 am each morning because, although they're lined, they still let in lots of light. I find it very difficult to get back to sleep once I am awake (I have tried putting on a sleep mask when I've woken up but find it's not much help and it's uncomfortable anyway). I know there is such a thing as blackout linings but can someone tell me how they would fix to my curtains?

  • I have these in my son's bedroom they just fasten to your curtains like liners, well mine do anyway. They are brilliant and their bedroom is now completely dark except for the little bit at the top of the curtains, but not enough to wake them. My eldest stays in bed until dinnertime at weekends (Well he is a teenager!!) and the light doesn't wake him and they have the sun on their room in the morning. Only one problem I can't remember where I got them from, as I have had them for a good while!! I think it could have been the curtain stall on my local market. Would recommend them though.

    Why practice!:T
  • Ikea do blackout roller blinds that you could mount behind your curtains?

'Tupplur' if the link doesn't work

Otherwise I think any decent curtain/fabric type place will sell blackout linings and tell you the best way to attach them.

You say "they just fasten to your curtains like liners" - how exactly is that?

Hmmmm..... not sure I want to start screwing into the UPVC frame - it's actually a patio door/window (bungalow in case you're wondering) and it would have to be 5' 6" wide by 7' 6" deep

I've just bought these - linings that hook onto existing curtains. Bought at Dunelm Mill who have good selection of sizes, very good quality and reasonable prices. Mine were around 44" wide (each curtain) and 6' drop, cost £12.99.

Have also seen blackout roller blinds in Matalan at low prices. Argos does them too, but all our local stores seem to be out of stock of the main sizes. Homebase also has blackout rollers, but double the price of others.

A good fabric shop will sell blackout lining by the meter. You make the linings yourself to fit your curtains. They hang on the same hooks as the normal lining - if you have separate linings.
