I do wonder about people viewing my houses when they talk about the pool table and where it's going to go. You want a bigger house to put a pool table in? Now that is odd to me.

Seriously, I had it iwhen selling a three bed town house and then the barn which is more than big enough for two people and their pool table  I've never been in a house with a pool table I don't think. Perhaps I attract buyers with pool tables?

Honestly this is what we are considering doing at the moment. We have 3 kids and feel that we need (and would like) more space. I'd like a second reception room, a garage. a utility, an ensuite - call me greedy but it feels like we are living on top of each other in this house and I'm constantly juggling 'stuff' to fit. We have no garage and no rear access so if the kids want to go on bikes/scooters etc they are wheeling them through the house. The bathrooms too small. There is only 1 storage cupboard. The third bedroom is tiny. But it was what we could afford when we moved here - plus we only had one child.
We're not quite at the stage where the next move up the ladder would be a comfortable one - however we're thinking about stretching ourselves with the way the market is at the minute - in order to get more space. it will come at a price though :(

I'm stretching myself a bit now in order that in the future when I find my forever (smaller) house I will be able to downsize and buy a place abroad with the leftover so I can spend that nasty bit between January and May somewhere warmer.

  • Thank you all. Interesting replies.
  • We are thinking of moving to a bigger house at the moment. We are in a 3 bed semi and we have one child. We do want 3/4 kids though and i am wondering if we don't move now will we ever do it at all??? It will mean stretching ourselves, but not so much that it's unaffordable. Just that we would have less disposible income than we're used to. It's a bit of a sticking point with my husband and i. I would prefer to stretch and have roomo for the family to grow. The husband would prefer to all squish in this smaller house and still be able to afford nice holidays and things.

I was kinda joking! Although if there was room Id buy one.

I want a bigger house as I had so much fun doing houses up. As a family we did two of my parents houses to help them trade up, then two of my brothers.

Then when I finally get my own place and do it up the market crumbles cancelling out all my work.

So my girlfriend and I reckon we basically have to save up another deposit for a second house as its pointless selling ours at +/- 2 or 3K what we paid.

But you can fit 3-4 kids in a 3 bed house. It is a squash but that I think isn't always the crisis people make out.
What's more important? Lots of empty space or a handful of kids?

Buying somewhere you are happy with rather than compromising and then wishing you had spent a bit extra in the first place. :)

I don't know really. I think it's all individual tbh. My partner and I live alone. no kids and no intention to have kids. We live in a 3 bedroom, 2 reception mid-terrace with our 2 cats and it is too small for us. We need 2 more rooms. We don't care much for room sizes, just number of rooms.

We use one bedroom as...a bedroom. Another bedroom as an office because I do alot of work from home. This room is overflowing with books, folders and all sorts with overspill onto the landing and our bedroom and dining room. The 3rd bedroom has a bed and my OH's clothes. As OH leaves for work at 6am every day, dressing in our bedroom and waking me up at 5am every single day would seriously affect me. So we need that second bedroom as a dressing room of sorts. Sounds a bit much but not many people would take kindly to being awoken every day forever at 5am unless they had to. This room has all our gym equipment as well which we both use daily. Our work hours prevent us from going to an outside gym and we keep quite fit. So essentially we don't have a usable spare room.

So although only 2 people we could do with a bigger house. Outsiders not knowing our situation would wonder why we need 4 bedrooms. Our current mortgage is 45% LTV and is base + .99% and portable so we would move if we found the right property. I'd trade up and stretch myself now because I intend to move once only again.

    Oops, long. Sorry
Keep it simple and you will find the middle way.
  • Me and gf are both 23 and are exchanging on a 3 bed semi. We went for it because If things are tight in the future we could stay in it for ever if needed.

However as we get older I can see ourselves upgrading. Not for the reason for more rooms, its just that bigger houses have bigger rooms. The living room in our new house isnt hugh and when I retire I would like somewhere that has alot of space, if your gonna be in it all the time why not spend some extra money on it. Whats the point of downsizing to a two bed when we retire if its a poki small box.
