If you print their T&Cs in relation to course cancellation and more information regarding the Uni, course and fees we may be able to give you a better a idea but you've been a bit vague up to now.

To answer the OP's question, the test is whether the charge is a genuine pre-estimate of the loss likely to be suffered in you not pursuing the course.

If it is too late for them to 'sell' your place on the course then they would be justified in charging you for the loss of revenue incurred less the savings by not actually teaching you.

Are they forcing you to leave or are you choosing to leave?

You do not say whether the charge was known before the course commenced?

It sounds like he's already left and the choice was his.

Agreed. That's my thinking. However, the bit about "I have been forced to withdraw from a university course due to their strict attendance policy" made me think that maybe they are telling him to go.

Or it is spin on his part, in that he is forced 'by circumstances'. I generally like to give OP's the benefit of the doubt, but in this case, the information coming forth is very limited, so I suspect he is looking for supportive opinions. This does no good of course.....

When I did my masters as long as they got their cash I can't imagine they would have really cared whether I turned up for classes or not!
