Banking Redundancy/Displacement

Options
I am in one of the large banks advising of redundancies yesterday.

I am on sick leave at the moment due to a broken foot - so my boss phoned me yest afternoon to advise what had gone on.

Basically the area I work in is becoming bigger and more involved and I have to reapply for my job. There will be 3 people to do the job I am doing based in a different location. I dont know how many people will be applying - but there are already 3 of us doing this job in my office now. I suspect that there would be approx 9 or more in the same position as me.

I have been on sick leave since the end of July and am still not sure when I will be able to return to work as my foot is still broken and I am still signed off. I am expecting to be signed off until at least the end of the year at the moment.

I have to reapply for my job by next Wed. My boss is phoning later to email me some info and give me some more information so I am not sure if I HAVE TO apply for my job or can ask for voluntary redundancy. Overall they are looking to reduce numbers by 1700 so they cant deploy everyone.

Would I be able to ask for voluntary redundancy straight away? Or will I have to wait and go through all the hoo ha of it all first.

I have not worked in a bank environment as my job is more specialised so it would be hard to place me somewhere else without training.

I have worked in the co for 4 years come March and have no idea what the package would be.

You will need to check with your manager what process they are following.

The bank does not have to offer you voluntary redundancy - they could ask everyone to apply for the jobs and then those that are not successful would be given redeployment or compulsory redundancy.

From their point of view, they will want to keep the best 3 people out of everyone who currently works for them. If they think the best people will ask for voluntary redundancy they aren't going to let this happen.
