Recovering deleted photos from SD card

In an attempt to recover some deleted photos I have scoured Google for some freeware software that will, as they all claim, simply identify images that haven't been overwritten yet on my SD card.
However, numerous programs have refused to even recognise that my camera is connected, some have said the card is damaged (it's not) and some say they only work in FAT or NTFS. So far I've only found one program that seems to recognise my card and that's called Recoverplus Pro, but is shareware and the trial version won't do anything useful ie. recover files.
Can anyone suggest where I am going wrong with progs that won't recognise my camera (I've tried turning it off and on again) or any alternative programs/methods?
Many thanks

Cheers guys, but I'd already tried those last night. Restoration insists n only using FAT or NTFS drives and won't entertain my SD card. Smart Recovery on 'quick' scan says the media is damaged (it works fine) and on 'intensive' goes through the motions of a scan but gives no sort of results at the end and the designated folder to recover files to remains empty.
Does anyone have any experience of successfully restoring images by plugging camera into a usb. I'm specifically working with a Kodak Easyshare Z730 if that makes any difference.
