House insurance on a house with an unchecked extension

We are renting a house and by chance we have discovered the 2 storey extension has never had a buildings completion certificate (the landlord built it himself). We only have contents insurance as the landlord insures the building - is it still possible to get a house policy if there is no completion certificate? Surely if the structure has not been checked this will render a policy invalid? Any thoughts much appreciated.

  • You can get contents insurance for your house, but the landlord obviously hasn't told the insurers that the house has been extended. If he had, they would have asked for the completion certificate. Same for remortgaging too.

Insurers do not generally ask for completion certificates on extensions and the like

Agree with Dacouch here - there are no conditions in the policy to say that the landlord has to have a completion certificate; just that the property has to be maintained in a good state of repair.
