Hi, i have been living in my new flat for 9 weeks now, this is my first place having moved out of my parents. When i moved in i phone npower to register the electricity in my name and was told they would charge me £40 for the month and then take the readings for subsequent bills. I didnt mind this as i would be worrying how much electricity i was using during the month as it was a set fee. So the next month comes and they charge me exactly £40 again, i thought it was a bit weird. I know there something called economy 7, is this where you pay a set fee?

I dont want to be paying £40 a month if i havent used £40 of electricity. Is there such a plan as this where you pay a set amount?

Look at your bill & the meter reading & work out how much electricity you've used. If you've had a meter reading you should be charged for the units used. If you have set up a direct debit then it has possibly been guesstimated that that is what you will use roughly each month.

They probably charging you more for electricity to accrue some credit before seeing your usage and amending your DD bills

When you say economy 7 am I right in thinking you only have electricity for light/heat from y understand of econmy 7 you get cheap electric on a night but pay more during the day

If that's the case £40 isnt a lot for both anyhow

Are you paying by direct debit, and do you understand how direct debits work?

Electric suppliers do not produce bills in the same way as, say, mobile phone companies. With mobile phone bills you get a bill each month and pay that amount by Direct debit (normally). However with electric companies you normally only get a statement each quarter (every 6 months in NPower's case) and they set your Direct Debit amount (in your case, £40 it would appear) in advance - making an educated (hopefully) guess into how mucgh electric you will be using throughout the year as a whole.
As other posters have said, you must check your readings and make sure they tie in with what NPOwer are using. As NPower only send statements out every 6 months, that will not be easy so it may be as well for you to ask them to go on to their online tariff. THis way you can give them your readings each month and (I believe) see the current balance on your account. Of course, ytou may not want to pay for your electric by Direct Debit. Many people don't and you could alternatively pay when you get the bill, use a payment card and pay regularly into a PayPoint outlet (some shops, Post Office) or have a prepayment meter installed where you have to charge up a key (normally) and insert that into the meter in order to get electric.

The £40 a month is what they have estimated you will use over a 12 month period , it isnt a bill . As other posters have said you need to check your readings and submit them every month / quarter . You could actually use more then £40 a month and could end up with a bil at the emd of the year
