ATM underpayment problem

Hello
Two weeks ago i used my local barclays ATM to withdraw £100 from my saving account.
When i tried to get my cash the machine only poked a very small amount of the edge of the cash out (hope you understand that:o) and i had to use my fingers in a pincher grip to get the cash out of the machine. I managed ok with the first £50, but the rest was bent up inside the machine and i couldn't grip it. The machine then closed and took the other £50 of my cash with it!
I went straight into the branch and explained what had happened. They said i'd have to wait until Monday then they could refund my account. I explained that i couldn't wait as this was my rent money and needed it today.
Anyway, after a few 'words' they agreeded to give me my £50 and i thought that was the end of it.
Today i get a call from my local branch asking questions about the money as the bank is £50 short somewhere and they assume that its from my problem (i guess it may have something to do with it as its odd that they are wrong for the exact amount i lost)
I've agreeded to pop in and see them tomorrow and try to sort this out, but does anyone know where i stand on this? will i be liable for the money or do they have to prove it was something i did?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

The first time we said hello, was the first time we said goodbye. As the angels took your tiny hand and flew you to the sky-you forever left us breathless. RIP my beautiful granddaughter

At the end of the day you never done anything wrong, therefore just go in and explain everything to them as you've done in this post.
If they demand repayment (i.e. your cash was spat out to someone else for instance) then the machine can tell them this and also you can offer £10 per month as repayment in a goodwill gesture.
To be fair, don;t fall out with them over it (its only peanuts after all) but definitely stand your ground. Legally, its up to them to prove being they are the ones £50 short - not you. They cannot offset anything to your account either as you never signed a withdrawal slip for the £50 they gave you (I assume), so legally the bank could not enforce repayment but still, i'd just help them any way I could being the small amount involved.2010 - year of the troll
