Timber Sash Double Glazed Windows

Hi

We've just bought a house with aluminium double glazed windows which need replacing. I'd like to replace with timber double glazed sash matching the houses on either side (husband not too bothered about them being timber or UVPC) , however first quote from German Window Company has come back at approx £14k for bay windows on ground and first floor.

At that rate I may be agreeing to UVPC.

Can anybody recommend a good reasonably priced window company in London that do timber? Also should we be looking for a joiner instead to do the work?

Thanks
Anna

Have you thought about using a local joinery firm?
  • Hardwood or softwood?
Makes a big difference to the price and quality.

    Try

    http://www.mumfordwood.com/index.asp

    or

    http://www.thewoodenwindowcompany.co.uk/

    Both do London quotes.
  • Hi - Thanks for the links. Thinking about using hardwood, as have read that it's longer lasting if looked after properly.

Also, thinking about using a local joinery firm, but don't have any recommendations.

    Hi Channonry,

When you do get the quotes my advice would be Not to entertain softwood(Redwood) they just don't last as long as a good hardwood and the vast majority of the price you will pay will be for labour so although harwood will be more expensive relatively speaking its not that much more.

I make joinery for a living and there are some hardwoods that some joineries use that are cheap but will not last much longer than softwood.

My advice would be to get quotes for either : Sapele ,Iroko or you could try Brazillian Cedar.......Steer clear of Meranti as its very cheap but won't last.......European Oak is lovelly but its around 2.5 x the price of Iroko and Sapele.........

Remember "Harwood" is a generic term , windows made from Sapele or Iroko that are treated every 4-5 years will last for decades......

    Good luck

PS: UPVC is much cheaper ,low manitenance, but its ugly, doesn't last longer than good hardwood windows and is not Enviromentally friendly,or sustainable.........

    Hi Channonry

leveller is right on all counts, especially the bit about uPVC......ugly. Especially if the other houses on the street are timber windows.

You didn't say if the windows were sliding box sash, casement or high performance?

I don't know if I can advertise my services but I am a joiner who makes and fits all type's of hard/softwood windows and doors. If you would like some more advice or maybe a quote then please feel free to get in contact.

I think you can private message me on here or my email address is mike@mywooddesigns.co.uk

You don't make any mention of semi-permeable membrane paint which will allow redwood to breath whilst giving it adequate protection. Do not dismiss softwood. Timber only ever decays through poor maintenance. Almost all original windows in London are softwood (granted a lot better quality and higher grain density). The additional cost of hardwood would exceed the cost of maintenance (decoration) 5/8 years on.

I certainly agree with the upvc bit - if you cannot afford the real thing best to wait until you can.
