Old British Gas bills from old flat

Hi all,

I would very much appreciate it if someone could come back to me on the following point.

Back in the day, 1/09/2006-9/4/2007, I was a student and living in a flat with three others. We were with BG but on 9/4/2007 moved suppliers. We did this and continued to live in the flat until 31/08/2007 without complaint.

As the period is so far back, none of my housemates can remember whether we paid any bill for the period but no-one can remember ever receiving one over the whole 12 months we were there. We may have paid a bill for the period, part of the period or we may not have paid anything. As you can imagine, I struggle to remember any of the drunken blur that was that year.

Anyway, we changed the gas supplier and paid all the bills from there on....

Today my housemate has recieved a bill from some dodgy debt collection agency for 500 quid for the period above. As you can imagine, its abit of a shock. We don't mind paying it if we owe it but I find it hard to believe that they can not bill us for a whole 12 months whilst at the property and then years down the track us down and demand it, for all we can remember, it may have been paid. We have no meter readings or anything, we would have taken them but we thought that was all settled.

What can we do to try and avoid payment/reduce payment.

Thanks very much for your help.

Kind regards

Thomas Clark

    Welcome to the forum.

BG will not normally let anyone switch supplier if there is a large outstanding debt for gas and electricity(the losing supplier can block a move).

They must have agreed meter readings with the new supplier(estimated or actual)

Are you sure that BG never sent you a bill for an outstanding sum during the 16 months you remained in the flat? It really is unlikely that they wouldn't have raised a bill.

What is the date on the BG bill the DCA sent you? Not the period of the bill, the date of the bill.

You really need to get on to BG and ask for a fully detailed account for the period you were with them.
