Lowtrawler - thank you for your help. I called him an "idiot" because I asked for help and (a) he wasn't being helpful and (b) he called me "ultra-numpty".

It's just a hard drive not something which has major compatibility issues - better in this case is faster access times, but apart from that they are exactly the same.

Don't ask for advice and then be rude to people who provide the answer you've asked for. :@
The sky+ box is rather more picky than your normal motherboard and some HDDs are not recognised properly. They have a list of HDDs that work due to trial and error, and i assume thats why the OP wanted the Diamondmax 9 specifically.
lol....everything has already been answered anyway...so good luck with upgrading

pealy - The HDD cost less than £100 - would it still be worth speaking to the credit card company?

£100 is more than enough, why don't you just give them a call, its worth a try.

Yup, get the credit card to chargeback the fee. Then either EPCBUYER will get in touch about it and you can return it or they'll not realise and you get to keep it for free :) It's a win win situation!

Also I agree, having done upgrade to a freeview box if you need a specific model then quite right to dig heels in! Well done!

You asked for help, and I compared the drives online which for some reason you couldn't do for yourself.

And sorry for the "ultra-numpty" but you clearly bought the replacement hard drive too impetuously and put yourself in a position where you had no choice but to return the original drive which might very likely have been fine for your purposes.

Enough said by me, I think.

I think you may have been a bit impetuous too, however you are within your rights. An email within the 7 days is enough to register the fact you want to return the goods even if they fail to respond.

Have a read of your rights under the Distance Selling Regulations here on the Trading Standards web site.

EDIT: Just re-read your post and realise you asked to send it back outside the 7 day period. That's trickier as you now need a reason to send it back - for example they sent you an inferior model to the one you ordered. Best check your facts and find out what you got.

If he keeps his emails and can prove he contacted the company, then the onus is on the said company to respond. As they havent bothered to respond then its the companys fault that the 7 days has passed. If they have supplied and incorrect item and he hasnt used it he should get a full refund inc all postage costs

It doesn't matter how the drives compare. He needed the specific one he ordered for a task where the drive type is important. The fact they sent a better one is neither here not there if it doesn't work in the environment it was purchased for. Either way he has a right to return it under the distance selling regulations. Having emailed them twice within 7 days of receipt I "think" he should still be able to return the drive.

If the worst comes to the worst Mike could sell it on.

D'oh - silly me thinking that Deacon wanted to know the difference between the two drives.

True he could have worded it better from the off but I guess he realised he needed that one in particular as indicated by his later posts.

Not wanting to get silly here but I think everything that needs to be said has been said - just read the thread. All we need is for Deaconblue to let us know the outcome.
