HELP NEEDED PLEASE.
i have been a member of the aa for 12 years and paying about £100 per year just for roadside relay. i'm going to france in july and need european cover for 7 days . the aa quoted me around £42 for 7 days what a shock on top of what i am paying. i've found a cheaper quote for a much better deal including european cover for £59 a year! so i have just rang the aa to cancel my breakdown cover, they said i've still got 2 more instalments left to pay because my cover does not run out untill december. i have not signed a contract since i began in 1994 have i the right to cancel with out having to make any other payments? any help much appreciated.

Just as a suggestion, check out

for UK and European Breakdown Cover for £44.99 (and the UK)

I could be wrong, but the contract you signed in 1994 may have given AA the rights to automatic renewal on your behalf, so therefore you may have only needed to sign the first contract. Have you claimed in the past 12 months?

AA breakdown cover is bought for a period of 1 year, you can either pay "up front " or by monthly or quarterly installments. Reading through the "small print" T & Cs it states:

" If the Member wishes to cancel after the cooling off period (14 days) has expired, and subject to any other statutory rights they may have, the AA will not be obliged to give refunds for any unexpired proportion of membership cover and, if membership is paid by instalments, the Member will still be obliged to complete any payment(s) due under the relevant instalment credit agreement.

Looks like you will have to pay the remaining payments, make sure you cancel at least 7 days before your renewal date or you might have to pay for another year!!

It's annoying, I know, they applied this clause when my Dad passed away, he had just renewed his membership up front but they wouldn't refund any of it, the only offer was to transfer it to a member of the family, who wasn't already a member, very kind of them eh?

This is an absolutely first rate package and just right for me and the OH as we travel to Ireland regularly. This is even a better offer than the one Martin recommended for Europe and it's with the same provider!!!!

Many thanks for this post, you've saved us loads.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
just to let you peeps know.

My renewal came up on the aa. They wanted £67 for renewal, for me and the wife. I told OH to Cancel as I had seen better offers on here.

Today when she phoned they matched the lowest quote I had, so it looks like they do budge when asked.

Reading your 1st post, If you join the new company just before you go to France in july, this would mean you have the cover for Europe so wont have to pay the £42 to the AA, also you will be covered until next July for £17 (£59-£42)
OK, you will have to pay the last 2 installments to the AA anyway but would then be covered under the new company until July, when the AA runs out in december.

Hope it makes sense, it just seems silly to give the AA a further £42 when you could put it towards the £59 with the new company.

Linda7, make sure your go via the link highguyuk recommended http://www.sharpinsurance.co.uk/brea...-insurance.php
as it is only £44.95, whereas going thru the link for Quoteline that Martin suggests it costs £59 for the same cover with Europ Assistance.
