cancelling AA breakdown

HELP NEEDED PLEASE.
i have been a member of the aa for 12 years and paying about £100 per year just for roadside relay. i'm going to france in july and need european cover for 7 days . the aa quoted me around £42 for 7 days what a shock on top of what i am paying. i've found a cheaper quote for a much better deal including european cover for £59 a year! so i have just rang the aa to cancel my breakdown cover, they said i've still got 2 more instalments left to pay because my cover does not run out untill december. i have not signed a contract since i began in 1994 have i the right to cancel with out having to make any other payments? any help much appreciated.
