Low price & quick sale vs. waiting around & higher price

Alritey,

Am looking to get rid of the family car due to various reasons. Ideally I want to get it shifted asap but realise I'll get less £ for it vs. waiting around and advertising it privately.

Peugeot 307 (shhh to all the Peugeot naysayers!) Sport, 27k miles '06 plate, 5 door, 2l petrol, leather, pretty good condition (couple of scuffs & stone chips), FSH. Needs 2 front tyres though.

Coincidentally got a text yesterday from Car Giant (bought it from them a year ago) offering to buy it. Depending on condition they'll give me £4,800 for it.

Should I bite their hand off or see if I can get a few more quid doing it privately - but get frustrated by the time it will take?

Cheers
Rider

  • I'm no expert here, but I would check on Autotrader, ebay, gumtree etc and see what similar models go for. You could check Glasses for the value of the car and/or get a quote from webuyanycar to get a comparison. At least then you'll know whether Cargiant are offering you a good deal.

Well, it seems to be a fair price they're offering but just wondering whether it's worth hanging on for a private sale. Checked Auto Trader and similar cars, higher mileage seem to be going for about £6,500 on trade - is this a typical mark up?

What did you pay for it? Is the offer a straight sale or disguised part ex?

I think paid £6,000 for it a year ago and 5,000 miles newer. Now, as to whether it's straight sale or part ex is another question, wasn't something that I thought to clarify. I presumed the former but could well be the latter seeing as they're in it to make money. Would be interesting to see what they would sell it for...?

Well its value won't go up the longer you wait;).

Also selling it sooner will get you a bigger refund of insurance and RFL, assuming you are not replacing it (which is what I inferred from your post).

Without knowing the 'various reasons' it's hard to say.

Well me & the missus are splitting up so getting shot of the car and splitting proceeds 50/50. Want to do it soon but not at the total loss of extra cash.

i.e. holding out for that private sale will get more cash, but I want to be done with it sooner rather than later. Not the greatest dilemma in the world but still something to be considered...

I pretty much guess it's me biting the bullet and making a decision either way. Might check out Car Giant to see what they say. I guess it wouldn't hurt to get it all nicely cleaned & shiny before they see it?

If they retailed it to you a year ago for £6k I'd be pretty sure the £4.8k they are offering now is a part ex figure.

1.Confirm that CarGiant will buy it back for £4800.
2.Find out how long their offer is good for.

assuming it is at least a week

3.Immediately advertise it privately for £5200 (or some figure over the CG offer).
4.If no one offers you more than £4800 sell it to CG.

In your circumstances I would sell sooner at a possibly reduced price because it is one more box ticked in this painful process.

Vaio & Landy - your input has been really appreciated. If it is PX at CG I doubt it'll go ahead as they're really not going to have any cars in that price range - at least decent ones.

Can anyone anticipate that I'll be back on soon asking what kinda car I should get...
