ideas for homemade pickles

sometimes ethnic grocers and farmers' markets sell the small pickling cucumbers, but you can make pickles out of any cucumber as long as the skin is thin - if you have any doubts then peel the cucumber anyway before pickling as a thick skin will get very tough during the pickling process. Bread and Butter Pickle and similar are very good with the larger salad cucumber.

Bit late for original OP but if anyone else thinking of ideas for a selection of small jars of pickles etc for a present, how about pickled quails eggs a la Tom Kerridge?
