Laptop repair gone bad

Took my laptop to a computer repair shop in a town near me to have the power supply fixed as the pin had snapped off of it. When checking it in the battery was dead as naturally we'd not been able to charge it for some time so he gave it a once over confirmed that he saw the problem with the power supply and said its an easy fix.

After 2 weeks he calls me and says its repaired, I go to the shop last night it powers up and there's a very obvious red tint around areas of the screen.

He immediately says he didnt know the boot password so couldnt check this before I came, well he could have asked me! And he also said that he couldn't check the status of the screen before I gave him the laptop to repair and is effectively hinting that he can take no responsibility for the now damaged screen because he never saw it working.

Well the fact the battery was dead is consistent with the problem it came in for, Im not trying to fleece him but as a customer sure I can't be expected to provide a battery for him to test this with, hes the one with the repair shop!?

At the moment we've reached a verbal agreement that if he can't fix it I'll get it back at no charge for the power supply fix and if he can fix it there will only be the original fee to pay but if he can't that still leaves me with a dodgey screen and after thinking about it I'm not sure I like it, I know that I didn't give him that laptop in that state.

But I'd just like to know where I stand with this if things go sour? Does he as a repairer have a duty to check everythings in working order before he starts work or do I have to demonstraight this somehow even if it were technically impossible to do so with the resource available to me?

Thanks in advance for any help!

It seems quite clear to me..

You have reached an agreement with the repairer about the way forward.

Verbal or written, that is an agreement.

Keep to your side of the bargain and ensure he keeps to his.

I don't think you can expect anything more.

if it came to court it your word against his, ask him what the repair price for sourcing and installing components to fix the screen would be, if he can do it suggest he pays for this, and you pay for the original psu problem and maybe a little extra?
    Back by no demand whatsoever.
