Hi
i have just been awarded dla for my son , my husband claims income support due to illness for us both , i was told at the tribunal for the dla by the judge to claim carers allowance for my son ? does it actually make any difference as we claim benefits , so just wandered if anybody knew if i would be any better off as it has took me since march to get the dla for my son and dont really want to go down that road again if i wouldnt be any better off .

Hello Caroline,
To claim CA, it's a straight forward application. Your son would need to be in the Middle rate care or above.
If your husband receives Incapacity Benefit or ESA, the premiums for that benefit may be higher than the CA. So you would stay as you are. But still apply, as it would give you an 'underlying entitlement'.
Also notify Child tax credits, as there are child disability premiums there.

Hi again
does that mean i will get the premium on top of my husbands claim for income support
we went to tribunal yesterday for the dla and won so it will be paid from march can i backdate the claim for the carers allowance
thanks very much for your help
sorry to be a pain but do i need to tell the icome support i ahve applied for careers allowance ?0 -
I am on IS and I am also my son's carer. I get carer's Allowance. I receive a premium on my IS for being a carer and then the CA is taken off the total amount. I think I end up about £20-£30 a week better off.0

Its £29 ish ontop of your IS, its not carers allowance but a IS premium because you son is disabled and you are carering for him.

If you claim CA it will be paid to you but will reduce your IS accordingly. However you will be entitled to a carers premium if £29.15 pw and it will be backdated to the date of the DLA decision so yes it really is worth doing. It can be done online so you don't even have to send for a claim pack. It's very straighforward and as long as you spend at least 35 hours pw caring then you will get it.I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!0

Hi. Does claiming careers's Allowance also affect the DLA of the person whom i care for.
It says on the website
The benefits of the person you care for
If you claim Carer's Allowance, it could affect the amount of benefit the person you care for receives.
The person you care for could lose the severe disability premium in their income-related benefit or the addition for severe disability in their Pension Credit. If you only have an underlying entitlement to Carer's Allowance and are not actually paid it, this will not affect the benefits of the person you care for.

A Severe Disability Premium is only paid to a disabled person who lives alone and has no one claiming CA for them. If you claim CA, they would lose the SDP. There is nothing taken off DLA itself.
In my case, I care for my son. He is only 13 and obviously still lives at home, so no SDP. I get CA. I also receive the DLA on my son's behalf (due to his age). The full amount of DLA is paid.0
