Finding a trustworth damp specialist

Has anyone used D Hewett MRICS of www.dampnessdiagnosis for sussing out a damp problem? Wondering if they are a really expensive option .They sound very professional in their website. Looking for such an independent firm to suss out the source of damp in a Victorian property in Finsbury Park London area. Any recommendations please? Or , just as importantly, any firms to avoid?

  • I do not know D Hewett personally but certainly would recommend you use a truly independent specialist surveyor in these subjects rather than relying upon a contractor to give you appropriate advice. There are a number of such Freelance and Consultant Surveyors on the Property Care Association (PCA) website - make sure you look under the appropriate heading as the majority of members on that website are contractors but this should be easy to navigate through from the : find a member search where it lists what type of member to look for. Ring around for prices and discuss what you are getting for your money. Hope this helps - kindest regards David Aldred

I used P Doyle and was happy with the report he produced. He actually gave an honest opinion unlike the usual caveat filled surveys which seem to be the norm. He doesn't cover the south but on his website I seem to remember he links to a colleague who covers the south.

Thanks David. Sadly on the PCA site there were no firms in London at all that were listed. Thanks myhoose for your input.

It's also worth looking at the government sponsored Trust Mark site - http://www.trustmark.org.uk/

That's where we found our damp man - Terry Read. He covers north Kent, so might go as far as Finsbury Park.

Thanks Framps, thats a handy site, Ill bookmark it.
  • Hi Anglicanpat,
When you go onto the PCA website go on find a member and then from that select Freelance Surveyor and the other one Consultant. Both are independent and two in London are Stewart Gledhill Associates and All Timber Infestation & Consultancy Services.

Hope this helps, kindest regards, David Aldred independent dampness and timber surveyor
