Birthday present for sisters 18th. 'Investments???'

I'm wanting to spend about £500 on my sister and figured straight cash would just get blown on girly nonsense so can anyone suggest a sort of investment fund thing which she can leave for the four years until after shes finished university and then have the option to take everything out or carry it on. In terms of safe investments these are pretty reliable right. I know what I'm asking is very broad but just from anyone elses previous experience what sort of gains can she see or is the gain so small that I'm better off just buying her a present.
Regards, Tony.
