urgent breakdown cover needed

My car won't start today. I don't know what to do!
???
I've tried jump leads - no luck, but then noticed that the electric alert light came on. I've called the garage and they say it'll cost £60 to come collect the car.
Do you think I'd be ok to join a breakdown service today and get them to come tow it to the garage. Are you allowed to join and get them to come out in the same day?!
I've had a read of the posts and Autoaid sounds good. Do they take to a garage of your choice?
hope someone can help!

Well, an answer to my own question:
I rang autoaid, who I gather are the same as Autonational rescue?? (or at least they use them to do the repairs?) and they quoted £76 to join and a £60 call out fee as I'd already broken down.
Figured out that I could join using a cheaper package and not tell them I've broken down. Also if you join Autorescue over the net you get 15 months for the price of 12. A
I'll be covered from midnight so I can call them in the morning and get it sorted.

Not sure about calling out on the same day that you join, but I've used AXA Assistance before for breakdown cover.
Much cheaper than AA/RAC.

Most breakdown covers exclude breakdowns in the 1st 48 hours after you join but RAC AA and Green Flag do offer an option which lets you join on the spot.It will cost you from c. £80.00 but I suggest you ring RAC on 08000 280964 quoting WJ 0003 to get more details.

I joined autonational rescue thanks to this site! I've saved loads on the AA and RAC. I didn't even know that other breakdown services existed!
Cover started at midnight (joined yesterday afternoon) and I called them this morning and they sent someone over really quickly. He fixed the car on the spot.
So I got my car fixed and have cover for the next 15 months for £53! brill.
many thanks MSE.comNo links in signatures by site rules - Forum Team 20 -

Darryl.
but not cheaper than green flag despite the claims!!
I just checked how much 2 cars under 11 years old was compared to green flag.....51.40 for this lot and 47.25 for green flag.....i dont work for green flag...just get annoyed with companies that make claims that arent true.Stevie Coppell's record breaking blue and white royal army - championship winners 2005-60 -

I joined GEM via their web site one evening, and by pure bad luck the next morning my car wouldn't start! But they give you a temporary membership number to use until your paperwork comes through, and they paid up without any problems0

Better late than never, or so they say. Having looked at this, Breakdown Direct say they guarantee to beat the price of similar cover from Greenflag. This means that if you find a cheaper price, why not challange them, rather than complain in forums like this. Secondly, I think there is some apples v pears going here. GF price on an individual basis, whereas BD simply price by age. My understanding of this means there could well be times when their cover is cheaper, but if not, let them know.
