Skiing Holiday

Hi I am interested in booking a cheap ski holiday for December this year. This would need to be 17th to23rd of December. There would be 8 of us, ages range from 46 to 13. Not sure what location we would prefer so any info would be great.
Thanks

Biggest problem at that time of year in Europe is snow - no-one knows which resorts will have it & which won't.

Perhaps a trip over the Atlantic to the Denver area would be a good idea.

Because you are travelling as a group you'll be able to rent a whole apartment, rent cars/vans by going directly to US companies/individuals - plus of course the exchange rate.

All you'd have to worry about then is the flight

Like Alan says, snow is the biggest concern at Christmas in Europe. This year was pretty poor by all accounts (& still is - my favourite resort in France hasn't had any snow since Boxing Day).

    BUT

I have skied the last 5 years over Christmas in Europe & had no problems what-so-ever. Maybe I'm just lucky? To be on the safe side go for a fairly high resort.

Most of the main tour operators have got their "early bird" brochures out for next year already, or will have very soon. Inghams do some good early booking discounts, but try Thomsons, Airtours, First Choice & Crystal as well. All of these you can price up on their websites. Igluski.com always seems quite competitively priced, but don't start selling for next season til later in the year. They're more of a late booker website.

Ski Activity is another option if you're looking for a catered chalet

My brother is in Mammoth, California. They've had 102" (yes one hundred and two inches)of snow since boxing day :o ;D
  • Hi, sorry to jump on your thread but i'm in the same boat!

I am wanting package deal to europe (Soll in Austria looks best so far for beginner and intermediates), but ski hire and lift passes are so expensive.

Is there anyway I can save money on hire and passes? If I dont want to buy passes from my tour company where can i get them from??

    Thank you
  • Hi All! There are lots of great ski options around this year. It's actually quite interesting that despite the credit crunch, travel news is full of stories about ski resorts expecting even more bookings than last year so there are actually quite a few good deals around.

If you'd like to stay closer to the UK then how about checking out places like Slovakia and Zermatt? Both are particularly popular this year and snow won't be a problem. Slovakia in particular should be very cost effective.

On the more traditional front, Chamonix is always a great choice and offers lots of inexpensive but excellent accomodation particularly if you stay somewhere in Servoz which is only 10 minutes away from Chamonix. It's absolutely charming and offers tons of cheap accomodation, great little restaurants and so on.

Re renting equipment and organizing passes, as far as I know the most cost effective way to do it is through companies like Inghams or Iglu who do great packages. Getting them separately is normally more expensive.

    I hope this helps!
