Virgin Train Ticket Changes

Hi
I booked advance tickets from London to Manchester for the end of November, however the friend I was visiting has now moved away!
I wanted to change my tickets to another date as I can visit someone in Preston and just purchase a ticket from Manchester to Preston.
I looked at the advance change rules on the internet and it says the following;
Both the date and time of travel can be changed. No refund permitted.
You cannot change the route (departing/arrival station)
Change fee £10
How can I request a change of journey?
Over the phone
Changes of Journey cannot be made online. To make a change to your journey you must call our customer support team. Please call 0870 010 1127, 7 days a week, 8am to 10pm. There is a £10.00 administration fee charged for making this change in addition to any difference in the cost of the new ticket.
Ticket Type: Select... Advance Anytime Off-Peak/Super Off-Peak
Please select a Ticket Type above.

So going by what the internet site says, I just have to pay £10.00 plus the difference in fares (although the tickets at the moment are only £23)
When I rang Virgin to make the change, the [STRIKE]idiot[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]call centre monkey[/STRIKE] person I spoke to tried to claim I had to pay £10 EACH WAY for cancellation, they would refund whatever is left over and then I pay the new train fare prices. How is this right?!! Firstly, Virgin only let me book two singles instead of a return and secondly, it says NO refunds on the website! Apparently I can only get a partial refund when I change the date of the train journey and pay the £20 charge.
I ended up hanging up in anger and frustration, as I was so annoyed. Any suggestions as to what I can do? I am happy to just rebook my tickets but surely there is some way of me getting some money back?

It is a £10 per ticket fee. When you booked, buying two advance singles would have been much cheaper than buying a return ticket.
So the guy was right!0 -

I hope no-one in your work life comes out and says things like that about you. He is right, you have 2 tickets. It's a £10 charge per ticket. These are in the T&Cs before you bought the tickets so theres no real need for you to moan.one of the famous 50 -
I'm not moaning about the charges, my point is that Virgin didn't offer the option of a return fare which would have been one ticket so why should I have to pay for 2 tickets when it wasn't my choice to have 2 singles?
Also, I was told over the phone that some of the original ticket price (minus the charge) would be refunded then I would have to rebook my ticket. The information on the website says no refunds and I have to pay any extra for the ticket if it costs more than the original ticket.
My point was that I'm annoyed that the information on the website is different to what the person on the phone said, and surely there is something I can do about that. If you bothered to read my post properly, you would see that is what my initial post was about.Became Mrs Scotland 16.01.16Became homeowners 26.02.16

You always have the option of return tickets from London to Manchester.
They are much more expensive than the 2 singles you bought.
This has been already advised to you.
The longer you wait to sort this, the more the fares will be going up, and the difference you will have to pay will also be going up.
It's in your hands to resolve it. You have 2 tickets, and the fee is £10 per ticket. This thread is a waste of time. You have no grounds to complain.0 -

You chose to buy two Singles because that was cheaper than buying a return ticket.psychopathbabble wrote: »Also, I was told over the phone that some of the original ticket price (minus the charge) would be refunded then I would have to rebook my ticket. Hence no refund.psychopathbabble wrote: »My point was that I'm annoyed that the information on the website is different to what the person on the phone said, and surely there is something I can do about that. I have just re-read you original post, and the big issue is that you have two single tickets and its £10 each to change them.
