register new website with search engines

Hi

Does any one know if you can register your website with the major search engines for free? We've just created our small companies site but are having difficulty getting it registered without going to 3rd party companies who wish to charge.

  • Yes you can. Each search engine has a page for this. I'm sure there must be other threads on this board given more specific details of the exact links. But DON'T pay a 3rd party to submit your website for you .... there's no guarantee of a higher ranking ... they'll just rip you off.

At the bottom of Google's first page of results there is a 'Dissatisfied? Help us improve' link which leads to http://www.google.co.uk/quality_form?. Fill in both boxes on that form, with your company's URL in the lower box. No guarantees that this will get you listed on Google, but it's worth trying.

The company who hosts my site automatically sends my URL to search engines. Also I'd recommend buying/borrowing a web marketing book, as third party submissions are only something you can do yourself with a bit of knowledge. Check out any of the O'Reilly books as they always are a good source of knowledge.

Be aware that it can take a couple of months to get listed on Google due to backlog.

In the meantime submit an entry to dmoz.org which Google uses for ranking and listing - this might get your site picked up quicker and it's a good way to start improving your ranking. There are only a few actual search engines with their own databases - all the others just use the same ones in different ways. I usually register sites on Google, Yahoo and MSN.

Dmoz is a good idea but I doubt that it will be very fast in listing you. As has been mentioned inward links from existing sites will get you found with out needing to submit your site and can be beneficial to being well listed especially with Google. You are also likely to be indexed faster as good established sites are spidered quite regularly.
