Goods "fit for purpose" period - how long for ?

Hi

I recall reading somewhere that, although standard warranty is for 12 months (e.g. digital camera), there are consumer rights to extend liability of retailer/manufacturer for longer than this.

Can someone please clarify.

I have a Canon digital camera purchased approx. 18 months ago which appears to have gone wrong & wonder if I may have case.

thanks

    Hiya

Under the sale of goods act 1979 (as amended) you have rights up to six years. The longer you have the goods, the less choice you have. For example you may not be entitled to a replacement but could be entitled to a repair.

Obviously it has to be relevant and be reasonable. Eg you couldn't claim for a bin liner up to six years as it reasonably would not normally last that long.

Alot of companies think that if its out of warranty you can't claim and that's nonsense.

Your contract is with the company that sold it to you, not the manufacturer but in reality you may have to go the manufacturer for a repair.

have a look at http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/after_you_buy/know-your-rights/ for further help.
