Hire Car Help

Hi

I got hire car and done the check and signed form. After they left and before i drove i noticed some damage to the underside of the front bumper and took video on my mobile. I believe it reasonable that damage to the underside of the bumper was not noticed , it was actually my 7 year old that spotted it!

Any advice on how this works and whether i am now liable as signed form without pointing out damage gratefully received.

If liable what do you think to getting it repaired by chips away or similar!

Thanks in advance

  • Chances are they won't notice it when you return it.

  • Call them straightaway - or are you posting this significantly after the fact.
I've picked up cars in the dark before and voiced concerns over seeing any damage and they've usually said let us know in the morning when you can see better.
  • Chances are they will notice it when you return it. I used to work for a well known hire car company. If the vehicle was signed for in it's condition then you will be liable for any damage that is found on the collection inspection.

Most places do have a policy that if the damage is spotted within 24 hours and you let them know they should be ok with it.

Best advice would be to call them as soon as possible and let them know. Make a note of who you spoke to and at what time and day. Also don't drive the vehicle until you have taken a photo of the milage clock and the damage.

This does seem excessive but best to cover your own back to save you being stung

Small stone chips in the paint work should be covered as fair wear and tear

Videoing it won't be of any use at all. You need to inform them of the damage *immediately*. It may be that they already know about it and you'll be ok.

We had a hire car in Spain which we neglected to check properly on the pick-up, it was only when we got to the resort we noticed there was a big dent on the nearside wing.

On taking the car back we'd expected a big fight but turns out they knew all about it!

I think I'd have been straight on the phone to them rather than wasting time posting on an internet forum. Perhaps they could have contacted the delivery driver and got him to return to approve the damage?

24 hours later ... probably too late now. Best you can hope is they don't notice it when it's returned.
