Debt Collector Home Visit

I'm in the process of saving up the £510 fee so I can declare myself bankrupt, I should have it by the end of November. But I have this morning received a letter from Mercers Debt Collections who are working on behalf of Barclaycard.
The letter says my account is overdue and they have been unable to contact me so they state
"We will be instructing a local debt collector to visit you at the above address to collect payment"
Now what powers does this debt collector have and what is my best way of dealing with him when he arrives?
Thanks

hi other more knowledgable peeps will be along soon.however does the letter say ..a visit or a call.cos from my experience they say call to make you think its a call to your house when really its a phone call. if however the letter says a visit sometimes its a way of getting you to ring them, cos i dont think its likely anyone will turn up. regards penny0

Hi Penny, the letter definitely says visit.0 -
Hi, its very very unlikely that someone will turn up at your house. Creditors, debt collectors or solicitors acting on their behalf have no powers whatsoever, all they can do is ask you to pay. The only power lies with the county court.

hi again this is the worst thing about b.r that i found an its hard to fend the creditors off untill you saved enough.as we have said they really dont have much powers unless they have a court order.they just rely on you not knowing this. so keep going not long now untill end of november. regards penny0

Just tell them you have filed for BR, that is if they actually turn up, otherwise just ignore them.:pB&SC No. 298

When I spoke to national debtline about it they said to ignore them, they cannot force their way in, they cannot step foot into your property unless you invite them and your not going to do that are ya! I would ignore the door, there's nothing they can do, even if you answer the door (which I wouldn't cos it might not be nice) they cannot force you to pay anything or take away any of your belongings.
I've read many a time on here that debt collectors are used as threats and i've hardly read where they've turned up.
Hope you're ok, scary I know. At least you know this will end soon. Stay strong x0 -
hi there
i agree with MicheH i wouldn't answer the door to them - in fact i never answered the door before all this - i'm unsociable like that:D
hang on in there x0 -
They(if they did turn up) have no power whatsoever.I also have been dealing with mercers. They sent me all sorts of nasty letters.I once rang them and asked them what time are they coming round to visit me,the girl on the phone was bemused, and said we dont do that.
I eventually complained to the financial ombudsman, it all stopped very quickly0 -

I've had the Mercer raceabout as well....I ignored them to the point of boredom...however, I did receive two personal visits......but whoever it was made darned sure nobody was in before ringing the bell.
Two strange cards left through letterbox, both with unintelligble writing on....
Another ''implication'' these DCA's like to hint at, is that htey MAY knock at hte 'wrong' door, thereby, by implication, let your neighbours know you are in debt.
This I know is a thorough no-no on their part...but they hope the debtor doesn't realise this....[or may not find out?]
I currently would welcome the attentions of personal visit debt collectors....especially as it would have cost ever so much in travelling to get to me.......to return very empty handed. No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0
