Wireless Router Help!!!!

Options
Hi,

I am using a Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless router with a Belkin PCI Wireless Adaptor, running Windows XP Pro.

The trouble I get is that when I enter certain websites, the main one is lovefilm.com, I lose connection to the router and obviously the internet. The only way I can go back on is restart the router!

I have upgraded the firmware on the router but it hasnt made any difference, I have got the latest PCI Wireless Adaptor driver no difference, even reinstalled Windows!

When I plug straight into the modem it works fine but dont like a long cable going everywhere.

Would it make any difference if I tried a USB Wireless Adaptor instead?

Please help?????

hi there, odd problem by the sound of it,
just a couple of ideas for you

    a) had a similar problem using a netgear router and using security options
basically the (WPA-PSK) option as the usb did not support it,
oddly it was able to connect for a while then lock up

    try wep

    b) has it got any perental / block site capabilities?
still this shouldn't lock the router

hope this helps, hmm very odd though

Hi thanks for your reply I have tried the above but no lock, will probably have a go using a usb wireless adaptor.

Is this consistent, everytime you go to the website, wirelessly, you lose connectivity, and everytime you do it wired, it works? Does it do it wirelessly if you are sat right next to the router?

    Which ISP?

Have you tried changing channels, or doing a repair on the wireless connection? You need to isolate whether it is the router losing connection to the internet, or your card losing connection to the router.

You can see what channels other people are using with Netstumbler, try and choose a channel well away from the neighbours.

If you do a ping -t 192.168.1.1 (or whatever your routers local IP address is) before you go to the website, that will prove whether it is your connection to the router, or the routers connection to the internet.

Another thing you could try is to lower the MTU to 1400.

Thanks I will try the above tomorrow.

I think the problem is that my card loses connection with the router as when this happens there are no wireless network connections availabe at all. When everything is working i can see two, mine and a neighbours.

    ISP is blueyonder.

It is consistently tempermental when I am on wireless and perfect when plugged straight into the modem, signal strength on wireless is excellent.

I have this problem on my laptop.

Are you using Blueyonder 4 or even 10Meg? What speed is the Belkin PCI card?

The problem with my laptop was that it was only a 802.11b card and couldn't handle the speed. So if I went to a website or tried to download a big file the card could not keep up and would lose the wireless connection. Only way around was to reboot. A 802.11g card worked fine in same laptop from same position.

Try a USB card or move closer and retest.

That suggests that it is nothing to do with your router or ISP, and all to do with your PC and or card and/or software.

Suggest trying to change channels, using netstumbler as a guide to what else is out there, and turn off any video senders/phones as a test for interference.

(right clicking on the wireless icon and doing a repair, may get it working again, without having to boot the router)
