Flashing lights on Fridge freezer erf 2832

Electrolux Fridge Freezer (built in) - From power on, green light comes on for three to four hours, then it starts to flash alternately with the amber light ie one is on when the other is off then vice versa. Anything that is placed in the freezer already frozen seems to retain that state however fresh food only shows some indication of freezing after about 24 hours. Fan does not appear to be in operation but as this is my mother's freezer I am not sure if and when it should come on. If unit is powered off, the whole cycle repeats from the top.
Would appreciate any suggestions relating to possible problems I can check out myself. I am a competent DIYer but have no knowledge of Fridge freezers. I have the user guide but there is no mention of this fault. Thank you.
