Suns Energy in Southern England in winter.

I'm trying to get figures for the amouth of energy in kW per m2 the sun provides on an average winters day to see if a homemade heating system can make a shed/office more bareable. The only figure I can find specifically for winter rather than a yearly average is 200 W/m2. Does anyone have a feel if this is per hour or per day? The source does not specify. If it's daily that's rubbish! But the sun does feel pretty weak.

I believe the Magic Words are "solar gain", but I don't have any real idea where to find it unless you know a friendly architect, or a helpful Google...
