I had to have this installed in order to retrieve some missing emails which are vital to me as they contain some important detail., this has to be installed to run a certain forensic program I'm told. However in the meantime it has caused problems, icons dont come up straight away on the desktop startup, it won't let me click on any links, the pop up blocker cannot be disabled, there will be more things I'm sure. And it won't let me go on ebay either...As its causing me problems I said that as soon as we get the emails back and saved to disc then I will not want xpack2 to remain, Now I'm told this won't be possible you can't take it off if you do it renders the computer useless?? anybody know anything please? I'm a tad confused and not relishing having all problems from this x pack thing....

Xp sp2 should not cause these problems with your machine.
How did you lose your data?, do you have adequate virus software, there is a very good program from grisoft called avg that is available free from here
Try installing this and running the live update option. It sounds as if you may have a virus or possibly some malware on your system, therefore also try lavasofts free adaware from here

If you haven't been running with XP with service pack 2 on the PC for some time, then you have been exposing the PC to the risk of infection. I suggest that you pop along to https://www.windowsupdate.com, and fully patch the PC, then address your remaining problems one by one (they are probably not caused by SP2).
Have you any current AV and antispyware /firewall software installed?
What is the forensic program that you are referring to?

Try a full service scan from here:

Aha! that has answered a few things, I had the free 30 day trial of AVG which has just run out, however before that I had something else which he said had not been working properly (can't remember what that was at this moment...) and he would put AVG back on afterall...I have also got adaware 6.0 (?) I don't know how the data was lost...the programme is a forensic one like the police use I was told...but so far it hasnt been sorted, and also some of my 'favourites' they have gone too....the four forums i regularly visit too...strange isn't it! i will tell you what forensic thing it is he is coming in the next couple of days...to hopefully do it, just that he doesn't explain to me sometimes and i like second opinions re this xpack2!0

Firstly are you sure SP2 installed properly. If you attempted to update to SP2 over the internet using the Microsoft update site, then you may finf that Microsoft will update your OS in stages.
Firstly do Start/Control panel/Performance and mantenance/System
Click on the General Tab - Under the OS description it should refer to Service Pack 2.
Can you confirm? No Links in Signatures by Site Rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -
Seems all problems are from sp2, but now my 'favourites' have been found, they had become hidden, I think in other unrelated folders, so its all been nicely organised now, the links work now, sp2 had disabled them and they could be switched back on, (don't ask me how he did it he was quick!) still can't access mail from toolbar though...and it still takes ages for icons to come up at startup...the pop up blocker is now disabled, so I can click on links, the old security i had was avira which was not working correctly so I went to AVG now am back with avira an updated one and it works ok. There hadn't been a virus on it I have win cleaner. and adaware. The missing emails were not recovered today as time would not allow. Also he said AVG is a little too thorough/restrictive and could have been interfering with the running of some things....though I still say it all happened when sp2 was put on, and icq.....update soon0

we used dbexpress, he downloaded it and we got my missing emails back - it looks like it, though I have to plough thru the whole lot to find the specific ones....0
