Old Telewest co-ax box, can I get Virgin media?

Hi guys, hope you can help me here I'm getting all confused.
Tomorrow I'm moving into a bedsit, but it's slightly odd in that it is not a seprate address form the landlord, it's really just a self-contained annex of his house - so all my post will go to him etc.
That's all fine by me as everything is included in rent, so I don't have to worry about service providers or anything. EXCEPT - it has no internet or phone line (gasp).
I don't really want a phone line anyway, so I was considering signing up with Virgin Media for cable-broadband only. It has occured to me there may be a problem if I do not have a seperate address, especially if the landlord already has Virgin Media (I haven't asked yet), surely Virgin are going to have a fit at the thought of having two accounts at one address.
However I did spy an old telewest co-axial box behind the bed (there is also a telewest phone jack but he said it's not connected), so I am wondering if I can get connected with their quick-start package and not have to worry about installation. What do you think? Is there any way of checking if the connection is still usable? Of course, I've tried ringing Virigin and asking, but it's not one of the questions on their crib-sheet, so the operator has no idea what to tell me and just passes me on to sales.
By the way, I've considered other options, I was hoping to use my laptop for watching streaming TV, Iplayer etc, so I think a dongle is out of the question.
Any thoughts appreciated,
Joe.
